Competency Based Training and Assessment

ACT logbook driving lessons in Canberra

CBT&A (Competency Based Training and Assessment) with an ACT accredited instructor, with coaching and feedback after every lesson.

What you'll practise

Build safe driving skills, not just signatures

The logbook pathway builds your skills over time. Your instructor teaches each competency, watches you drive, and signs it off only once you show it safely and consistently.

Instructor-hour credit

Under current ACT guidance, the first 10 hours with an ACT accredited instructor can count as 30 supervised hours. Later instructor hours count one for one.

You still need to pass the Hazard Perception Test and meet the age and licence requirements.

How CBT&A works

How the 23 CBT&A competencies work

CBT&A, often called the ACT logbook, lets you build skills step by step. Finish it and you don’t need a separate government driving test.

1

Competencies 1 to 17

Foundation skills are taught and assessed one at a time.

2

Review of 1 to 17

Those skills are combined in normal traffic.

3

Competencies 18 to 22

Higher-level skills: complex traffic, merging and hazard recognition.

4

Review of 1 to 22

The full skill set is checked before the final assessment.

5

Competency 23: Final Drive

Independent driving in unfamiliar areas, assessed by your instructor.

Competencies are signed only when you reach the required standard, so the number of lessons varies from learner to learner.

Your options

Logbook or government test?

ACT learners can use competency-based training or a one-off practical assessment, depending on eligibility. We explain the options; Access Canberra decides licensing eligibility.

The Final Drive happens on public roads chosen by your instructor, not at a test centre. Training can cover Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden, Tuggeranong, the Inner North and Inner South. The route isn’t published or rehearsed, because unfamiliar roads are part of the assessment.

What happens next

A practical path to confidence

1

Initial assessment

Tell us what you’ve done so far and what feels uncertain. We start by watching you drive.

2

Focused practice

Each lesson works on a small group of skills, in conditions that suit your level, with patient coaching.

3

Clear next steps

You finish with honest feedback and what to practise with your supervising driver.

More lessons

Other lessons you might need

Mock drives and focused practice on observation, lane choice, speed and manoeuvres before your assessment.

Smaller steps, calm explanations and repetition without pressure, at a pace that suits you.

For international drivers: ACT road rules, local conditions and the skills an assessment looks for.
