“How many driving lessons will I need?” is the question we hear most from Canberra learners and their parents. The honest answer is that it depends on you, but there are some clear numbers from the ACT rules that help you plan, and a few things that make a big difference to how quickly you are ready.
If you are doing the ACT logbook pathway (Competency Based Training and Assessment, or CBT&A), Access Canberra says the minimum is 7 lessons and most people need between 10 and 15 with an ACT accredited driving instructor. If you are taking a one-off practical driving assessment instead, there is no required number of professional lessons, but most learners book some test preparation first.
Professional lessons are only part of the picture. Before you can get your P licence in the ACT, you also need logged supervised driving:
The good news: each hour with an ACT accredited driving instructor counts as 3 hours in your logbook, up to 10 actual hours (30 credited hours). So 10 hours of lessons can cover 30 of your required hours.
Check the latest rules on the Access Canberra provisional licence page.
The single biggest factor. Learners who drive regularly with a parent or friend between lessons usually need far fewer professional lessons, because the lesson time goes on new skills instead of re-learning the basics.
A complete beginner who has never sat behind the wheel will need more lessons than someone who has done 40 hours with family. Your first lesson includes a quick assessment so your instructor can give you a realistic estimate.
Nervous learners are just as capable, they simply benefit from a calmer pace. Building confidence step by step usually saves lessons in the long run. See our nervous driver lessons.
Manual takes longer to learn because of clutch control and gear changes. Most learners find automatic quicker. Read about automatic and manual lessons.
Canberra has a lot of multi-lane roundabouts, arterial roads with changing speed limits, and busy town centres such as Gungahlin, Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong. Practising in a range of conditions, including night driving, makes you assessment-ready faster.
A typical new learner on the logbook pathway might plan for around 10 to 15 one-hour lessons, spread over several months, with regular family practice in between. Someone who already has lots of supervised hours and just needs competencies signed off may need closer to the minimum. Your instructor will tell you honestly after the first lesson.
At Progressive ACT Driving School, a single 60-minute lesson is $85, and eligible new logbook learners can start with a first lesson for $75. Logbook packages bring the price down: 3 lessons for $240, 5 for $390, or 10 for $780 (from $78 a lesson).
